To mark the publication of The Collected Poems of Bertolt Brecht, Tom Kuhn and David Constantine (the translators and editors of the new 1300-page edition) are joined by soprano Sarah Gabriel and pianist Joseph Atkins in a programme of Brecht songs and poems, devised by Tom and David and directed by Sue Parrish.
Brecht is an extraordinarily varied and accomplished poet whose poetry is far too little known in English. It is also frighteningly contemporary. The evening will feature famous theatre songs and less familiar 'high-art' songs, alongside poems excoriating the demagogues and capitalist powers-that-be, expressing sympathy for the victims of society and of politics, and celebrating the things that make a human life worth living.
The event, which will be all in English, is free to attend and all are welcome. It will be accompanied by a small exhibtiion of posters celebrating the new translations, as well as an opportunity to speak to the translators, and maybe even buy a copy of the book.
There is no ticketing, but please email writing.brecht@mod-langs.ox.ac.uk with name(s) and we will hold seats for you.
